Privacy Policy
Shore Check is built to respect your privacy. We collect as little data as possible — and most of what the app needs never leaves your device.
Location
If you choose to find your nearest station, Shore Check requests your location through your device's location services. This happens entirely on your device. Your location is used only to work out which tide station is closest to you. It is never transmitted to, or stored on, any server — not ours, not anyone's.
You can use Shore Check without sharing your location by selecting a station manually.
Tide data
Tide predictions and station information are provided by the UK Hydrographic Office under the Admiralty Tidal API. Shore Check requests this data on your behalf when you view a station. The requests contain only the station identifier and a date — no personal information is shared with the UK Hydrographic Office.
These requests are routed through serverless functions hosted by Vercel Inc. (San Francisco, USA), which act as a data processor on our behalf. Vercel may log request metadata (IP address, timestamp, station queried) for operational and security purposes, retained for a short period and not used for any other purpose.
We only hold your email address if you voluntarily subscribe to our newsletter, which is managed through Buttondown (Buttondown LLC, Charlotte, USA), acting as a data processor on our behalf. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email, and we never add you to a list without you asking.
What we don't collect
- No names and no accounts
- No payment or card details
- No usage tracking or behavioural profiles stored by Shore Check
Payments
Purchases are handled entirely by Apple and Google through their app stores. Shore Check never sees your payment details. Please refer to Apple's or Google's own privacy policies for how they process your purchase.
Your rights
Under UK and EU data protection law (UK GDPR and EU GDPR), you have rights including the right to access, correct, or delete any personal data we hold about you, and the right to object to processing. To exercise any of these rights, email hello@shorecheck.com. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
Children
Shore Check is suitable for all ages. We do not knowingly collect any personal data from children.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the "last updated" date above and, for material changes, post a notice on shorecheck.com.
Governing law
This policy is governed by the laws of England and Wales.
