Terms of Use
These Terms of Use govern your use of Shore Check, a mobile application and website for UK coastal tide times. In these terms, "Shore Check", "we", "us", and "our" refer to the app and its operator (referred to below as "Punch"); full company details are set out under "Contact" at the end of this page.
By downloading, installing, or using Shore Check, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use Shore Check.
Not for navigation or safety. Shore Check must not be used for navigation, safety-critical decisions, or marine planning. Always consult official Admiralty charts, harbour authorities, and qualified sources before going on or near the water.
The service
Shore Check provides tidal predictions for UK coastal stations. The data is sourced from the UK Hydrographic Office (ADMIRALTY® Tidal API) and is presented in a simplified, visual format designed for casual planning use.
Shore Check is available as a paid application (currently £2.99, one-time purchase) through the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Important: not for navigation or safety-critical use
Shore Check is designed for general beach and coastal planning by casual users. It is intended to help you decide whether to visit the beach, time a dog walk, or plan a day out.
Shore Check must not be used for:
- Navigation of any vessel, whether commercial or recreational
- Commercial maritime operations or fishing operations
- Lifesaving, search and rescue, or emergency planning
- Any activity or decision where the accuracy of tidal information is safety-critical
- As the sole source of information for crossing causeways, tidal islands, or tide-dependent coastal paths
For navigation, mariners must use official Admiralty charts, tide tables, and publications. For any activity where tidal conditions could affect personal safety — including coastal walking near tidal areas, rock fishing, cave exploration, or crossing tidal causeways — you should consult multiple authoritative sources, check local conditions in person, and never rely solely on Shore Check or any single app.
Tidal predictions are forecasts based on astronomical and historical data. Actual tide times and heights may differ from predictions due to weather conditions, atmospheric pressure, storm surges, and other factors. Shore Check cannot account for these variables.
Tidal data & copyright
Shore Check contains ADMIRALTY® tidal data: © Crown copyright and database right. Used under licence from the UK Hydrographic Office.
This data is provided for your personal, informational use within Shore Check only. It must not be redistributed, resold, systematically downloaded, scraped, or otherwise extracted, in whole or in part.
Third-party data & service availability
Shore Check relies on tidal data provided by the UK Hydrographic Office via the ADMIRALTY® Tidal API. This data is provided to us under a licence that may be subject to change.
We cannot guarantee that this or any third-party data source will remain available, accurate, or affordable indefinitely. If a data source becomes unavailable, or if its terms change such that Shore Check cannot reasonably continue to provide its core functionality, we may need to:
- Modify the service (for example, by substituting an alternative data source, which may affect the coverage or precision of predictions); or
- Suspend the service temporarily while we seek alternative arrangements; or
- Discontinue the service, in whole or in part.
We will provide reasonable notice of any material change to the service or its discontinuation, where circumstances permit. Notice will be provided via the Shore Check website (shorecheck.com) and, where possible, via in-app notification or email to newsletter subscribers.
If we discontinue Shore Check or materially reduce its core functionality within 12 months of your purchase: you may be entitled to a refund of the purchase price through Apple or Google under their respective refund policies. We will provide clear instructions for requesting a refund through the relevant app store at the time of any such notice.
After 12 months from the date of your purchase: we may discontinue or materially change Shore Check without refund liability, though we will provide reasonable notice where possible. This reflects the nature of Shore Check as a low-cost, one-time-purchase utility that depends on third-party data services outside our control.
Nothing in this section affects your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 or any other applicable legislation.
Intellectual property
Shore Check, including its design, user interface, animations, illustrations, and written content, is the property of Punch Communications Ltd. You may not reproduce, distribute, modify, or create derivative works from any part of Shore Check without our prior written permission.
Payment & refunds
Shore Check is sold through the Apple App Store and Google Play. All payments, billing, and refund processing are handled entirely by Apple or Google under their respective terms. Punch does not process payments directly and does not receive or store your payment information.
For refund requests, please contact Apple or Google through their standard support channels.
Limitation of liability
Shore Check provides general tidal information for casual, non-critical use. You are solely responsible for your own safety and for any decisions you make based on information provided by Shore Check.
To the fullest extent permitted by law:
- Punch Communications Ltd shall not be liable for any loss, damage, injury, or harm arising from the use of, or reliance on, Shore Check or the tidal data it presents, whether direct, indirect, incidental, special, or consequential.
- This includes, without limitation, loss arising from inaccurate tidal predictions, service interruptions, data unavailability, missed tidal windows, or any decision made in reliance on information provided by Shore Check.
- Our total aggregate liability to you for any claim arising from or related to Shore Check shall not exceed the amount you paid for Shore Check (currently £2.99).
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability that cannot be excluded or limited under the laws of England and Wales.
Your responsibilities
You agree to use Shore Check only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these terms. You acknowledge that:
- Tidal predictions are estimates and may not match actual conditions
- You will not rely on Shore Check for navigation or safety-critical decisions
- You are responsible for checking conditions in person before undertaking any coastal activity
- You will comply with all applicable local laws and safety guidance
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Your continued use of Shore Check after any changes constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
Governing law & jurisdiction
These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Any dispute arising from or in connection with these terms or your use of Shore Check shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
